Marras, the founder of a well-known family of bakers, died in hospital a few hours after being admitted to the hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained in the accident.
That evening the victim had been spending time with some friends and was returning home.

He had just started to cross the road, near the pedestrian crossing, when a Hyundai “Atos” driven by a woman resident in Ittiri passed at moderate speed in via Marconi and was unable to avoid him. The vehicle had hit the man in the leg and knocked him to the ground.

The driver immediately stopped and raised the alarm with her cell phone. She remained close to the elderly man until the rescue operations were completed by the 118 operators who transported the injured man to the hospital in Sassari in an ambulance.
At that moment – and also during the initial checks at the emergency room, where he had been classified with a yellow code – the 80-year-old was conscious and had not been declared in danger of life. Around 1:30 in the morning the situation had worsened and Gavino Marras had died shortly after.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Sassari had opened an investigation for road homicide and summoned to the hearing an engineer who had been responsible for ascertaining whether or not the lighting on that stretch of road was adequate if there was visibility. The defense attorney for the 35-year-old, Gianfranco Oppesinstead managed to convince Judge Claudia Sechi that it was an unforeseeable event and that the woman stopped immediately to provide assistance. The judge granted mitigating circumstances to the defendant and did not grant provisional damages to the civil parties.
The victim’s family members had joined the civil action with their lawyers Michael Galia, Mark Flowers e Victor Deloguwhile the lawyers Andrea Piroddi e Salvatore Salaris they protected the insurance company cited as civilly liable.

On the evening of the accident, the first to intervene, together with the 118 rescuers, were the carabinieri of the Sassari company. The 35-year-old who was behind the wheel had been subjected to an alcohol test which came back negative. The woman had told of a sudden crossing of the man who had not realized the arrival of the vehicle. The braking attempt was not enough to avoid the impact. A few hours after arriving at the hospital in Sassari, the eighty-year-old’s heart stopped.
