The philosopher and former mayor of Venice Massimo Cacciari, in an interview with La Stampa, returned to comment on the result of the vote in the EU, which saw a decisive move forward by the extreme right.

«The popular ones won, of course, but I feel like saying: those who are satisfied enjoy it. With such an advance by the most extreme right-wing parties, from the AfD to the Rassemblement National, claiming victory is a bit irresponsible, to say the least.”

“There is a basic trend in Europe: a very decisive advance of the right. And it is not just the right that will inevitably remain in opposition, Le Pen, AfD. Although we will have to see how things go in France: if a France led by the extreme right were added to Italy, the panorama would change completely.”

«It is irresponsible for the left not to see that the problem does not only concern the right-wingers who remain in opposition, but the advance of the right-wing as a whole. Right-wing policies, convergence with the center on an economic, social and fiscal level, not to mention foreign policy.”

“The problem is the push of the extremists towards the center. A push that is taking all of European politics to the right. And the left is completely subordinate to this overall trend, while it should be shouting: where is the Europe of solidarity, of subsidiarity? The Europe that thought of forms of greater democratization, even of its own Constitution? Where has it ended up?”
