The book describes a 105 km route which, starting from San Mauro Castelverde in the Madonie Park, crosses several historically significant municipalities such as Gangi, Sperlinga, Nicosia, Troina, Capizzi and ends in Cesarò, in the heart of the Nebrodi Park. The book, full of images, is accompanied by detailed descriptions of the stages of the itinerary and the places crossed, enriched with historical curiosities and information of tourist interest.

“Our objective was to create an itinerary that offered the opportunity to reflect on the importance that cultural heritage plays in the representation of the identity elements and image of a territory, to also be used in a tourist perspective. In this context, tourism becomes a tool for promoting the memory of a community, actively participating in its conservation”, says Vincenzo Asero.

And Giovanni Nicolosi, co-author of the book, added: “We wanted to make these paths accessible not only to trekking enthusiasts, but also to those who want to immerse themselves in a rich and detailed historical narrative, offering a complete experience through texts, images and references historians.”

The volume, created as part of the national research project Brigandage revisited. Narratives, practices and political uses in the history of modern and contemporary Italywhich involved the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Catania, together with other Italian universities, aims to make known and discover places, episodes and characters linked to the events of the Maurina gang by following a historical and memory path that goes from the first years after the Unification of Italy up to the siege of Gangi by the Prefect Cesare Mori in 1926.

A work that promises to become a point of reference for lovers of Sicilian history and nature, as well as for all those who wish to rediscover the roots of a fascinating past through a unique and engaging travel experience.

THE AUTHORS

Vincenzo Asero He is a researcher in Applied Economics and a lecturer at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Catania. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Master in Tourism Promotion and Management of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the University of Catania. He has been involved in tourism and territorial development for over 30 years with particular reference to Sicily, also carrying out consultancy activities. On these topics he has numerous publications to his credit, including journal articles, volume contributions and monographs for national and international publishing houses. He is a contact person for several international scientific journals dealing with tourism.

Giovanni Nicolosi he graduated in Bologna at DAMS and in semiotic disciplines. He is a nature guide, an expert in experiential tourism, and has been working in the Madonie area for over 15 years. Among his professional activities, he deals with the valorisation of the Tiberius Gorges, a UNESCO geosite in the Madonie Park, as well as managing the Zipline Sicily and the highest giant swing in Europe in San Mauro Castelverde. He is interested in the phenomenon of banditry on the Madonie and has published on the topic Nineteenth-century Sicily, prisoner of Maurine brigandsPietro Vittorietti Edizioni, 2012. He has conducted research on Madonie culture and Sicilian traditions, some of which has been published in volumes.
