The anti-Salis motion passes in Lombardy, but it is an own goal for the majority

A gigantic and sensational boomerang for the majority, but above all for Aler, because it exposed all its shortcomings. It is motion 165 presented by the Brothers of Italy and discussed today in the Regional Council regarding the alleged debts of Ilaria Salis, elected MEP of Avs, with the Lombardy regional company for public residential construction. A bill, according to the majority, of 90 thousand euros.

The motion was approved amidst shouts and insults with 45 votes in favor and 19 against. Some centre-right exponents went so far as to show signs in the chamber reading: “Salis pays the rent”.

Salis never explicitly mentioned in the text

The text, presented by the Fdi advisor Marcello Ventura, commits the council to urge Aler to start the legal procedures for the recovery of the alleged credit accumulated by the current Avs MEP – which was never explicitly mentioned in the text of the motion itself – for the occupation of public housing, until the possible seizure of current accounts. The discussion immediately became heated, particularly after the interventions of the opposition councillors Honorio Rosati (Avs) e Nicola Di Marco (M5s).

“Instrumental motion” according to Rosati

“Employment is an issue of struggle to raise public awareness abouthousing emergency. The motion presented by the right is absolutely instrumental, it was made to damage Salis two days before the vote”, said Rosati, who then explained: “We have the 2023 budget of Aler Milano where there are more than 8500 irregular situations within of the company for several tens of millions of euros”. The Avs councilor explains to The Newsa: “The motion was used to cover the defaults of a company for which we have tens of thousands of vacant homes that are not assigned due to the management inability of a regional company”.

No official document attests to the alleged debt

To reveal the alleged debt towards Aler di Salis it was some right-wing newspapers, which had also quantified the total unpaid rent for the occupation of a house in via Borsi at 90 thousand euros. However, there is no document proving that that figure exists.

“The motion is a disarming approximation, a shameful set of botched sentences and nothing else,” comments the Pd councilor Carmela Rozza, “We in no way share Salis’ opinions, but we have a clear position: criminals must be evicted among the squatters and vulnerable people must be protected. But first of all, in support of the right to housing, the over 19 thousand empty homes in the Lombardy Region must be assigned.”

“In the face – he added – of thousands of families who are entitled to it and have been waiting for years for public housing, the Region leaves thousands of homes empty, a condition which inevitably facilitates the proliferation of illegal construction. At most, the Region evicts a few fragile families, increasing an already widespread social problem, but it does not affect the criminals.”

De Marco: “In Milan there are 6,500 vacant apartments and 20 thousand requests”

“The one presented by the center-right was an instrumental act in substance and unacceptable in form. However, it was an important moment to shine a light on the disastrous management of the public building heritage by the Region and Aler”, says the M5s group leader Nicola Di Marco, which speaks of “a management for which nothing has been done during this legislature. The numbers speak of approximately 6,500 vacant homes in Milan and its province, in the meantime approximately 20,000 requests from eligible beneficiaries remain unanswered. The motion presented by the centre-right is surprising, because in much more serious situations, even in the face of convictions, similar requests to protect the honorability of the regional institutions have not been received from the same parties”.

“Trampling on institutions for propaganda is unacceptable”

He says Lisa Noja of the Action-Italia Viva-Renew Europe council group: “For pure exploitation, the right calls the Regional Council to vote on a motion that deals with a single case relating to supposed debts of which no one can know the amount and title. Which is unacceptable because it is not up to the Council to ascertain whether and what rights Aler can claim against the Hon. Salis and what initiatives to take to make them count.” “We know that by now, on the altar of propaganda, everything is allowed, but – he concluded – trampling on the instructions in this way is unacceptable”.
