The Ladin valleys of the Dolomites are rich in traditions and Val Gardena, every year in August, organizes a costume parade to remember them. This event, accompanied by customs with a profound and symbolic content, is a moment that involves the spectators but also the inhabitants of the valley themselves, who are very sensitive and attentive in passing on their history.

Val Gardena in Costume It will take place Sunday 4th August when many people from Gardena will wear their typical costumes, always characterized by richness and originality, due to the fact that the ancestors had the opportunity, traveling around the world, to learn about new things and to purchase or exchange silks, ribbons, fabrics, lace and jewels. The Val Gardena costume is still one of the richest and most interesting in the entire Alpine range and is worn above all on the occasion of processions, large religious festivals and folkloristic processions.

A characteristic of the Val Gardena costume is its versatility. Once upon a time, every aspect of society could be distinguished through customs; as the years passed and the marital status changed, a new dress was introduced. On the occasion of important holidays, all the people of Val Gardena wore “Cneidl and Bagana”, a black hat, with a matching coat. Like many traditional customs, that of Val Gardena also indicates whether a woman is married or still single; in this case, it is the headdress that indicates marital status. Even for men, the costume shows who is married or still single.

The parade Val Gardena in Costume will take place this year in Ortisei and will be part of a large festival. Musical bands from Val Gardena will perform on stage, playing traditional and modern music connected to the region. The repertoire will also include folk dances and the highlight of the festival will be the large parade with traditional costumes. Of course, you can also taste local food and drinks at the various stands.

Val Gardena in Costume will be preceded by other events, starting with the Traditional Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market in S. Cristina which, every Tuesday, from 25 June to 3 September, will reflect the Ladin tradition with tastings and local music.
