NURSES SHORTAGE – The situation in penitentiary facilities, staff shortages in Aversa, Santa Maria and Calvi Risorta

10:50:42 The health situation in Campania prisons is alarming due to the serious shortage of nursing staff. This deficit puts the right to health of prisoners at risk and creates significant difficulties in health management within penitentiary facilities.

The trade union organizations Fials, Nursind and Nursing Up have denounced the situation, highlighting the lack of nurses in several penal institutions in the region. Among the most critical, the “Filippo Saporito” prison in Aversa, where 4 nurses are missing, Carinola (11), Arienzo (3) and the Uccella di Santa Maria Capua Vetere (14). Added to this last structure is the lack of 3 operators for the mental health sector and 13 for the treatment of pathological addictions.

The juvenile penal area also suffers from this shortage: there are 13 nurses missing in the Rems of Calvi Risorta and 1 operator in the surveillance direction. Working conditions for nurses have become unsustainable due to exhausting shifts and frequent forfeiture of holidays. This leads to a further worsening of the situation and a lower quality of healthcare provided to prisoners.

The unions are calling for the hiring or transfer of staff to the penitentiary infirmaries to deal with the emergency and guarantee the inmates’ right to health. The objective is to find concrete and timely solutions that restore dignity and sustainability to the work of nurses and ensure that prisoners receive adequate care.

The lack of healthcare personnel in Campania prisons is a serious problem that requires immediate intervention by the competent authorities. Guaranteeing prisoners’ right to health is a fundamental duty and cannot be compromised by staff shortages.

In addition to hiring nurses, it is necessary to invest in staff training and improve working conditions to make them more attractive. Only with a concrete commitment and adequate measures will it be possible to guarantee efficient and dignified healthcare within Campania prisons.
