In the “backbone” of the twenty large hospitals in Italy that guarantee the most complex treatments, attracting patients from all over Italy, there are three Tuscan ones.

The ranking

They are the university hospitals of Pisa, Siena and Careggi. The ranking comes from the technicians of the Ministry of Health who selected the hospital centers with the highest number of discharges, to which a score was assigned taking into account the complexity of the cases treated (average weight of the cases of the DRG indicator, which groups together the cases by diagnosis) and attractiveness of patients from other regions. «This is a new certificate of the quality of Tuscan public health services, which can only please us and make us proud – underlines the president of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani –. However, the quality of a universal public health service is defended over time with adequate resources: resources to invest in healthcare requested by all the Regions and which the Government is currently not guaranteeing adequately”. Here is the top 20 of large hospitals (which does not correspond to the best performances). The first three large hospitals are located in Milan: Galeazzi, Humanitas di Rozzano and Ircss San Raffaele. In 13th place there is still a hospital in Milan, the Niguarda, and in 15th place, with the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia, are the hospitals in Lombardy (10 million inhabitants) which reigns supreme with 5 out of 20 structures. Southern Italy (20 million inhabitants) only two structures are reported: the Colli di Napoli hospital (14th) and the Casa Relief of Suffering hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo (Puglia) in 16th place. In Veneto there are three others (the University hospital of Verona, that of Padua and the Sacro Cuore Don Calabria hospital in Negrar). In Rome the Gemelli, the Biomedical Campus and the San Camillo Forlanini. In the North there are also the San Martino Hospital in Genoa and the Mauriziano Hospital in Turin, while in the Center there are still the Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna and the Ospedali Riuniti Hospital in Ancona.

The scores

«The scores attributed by the Ministry of Health to the three large Tuscan hospitals are a recognition of the quality of our public healthcare – comments the councilor for the right to health Simone Bezzini – Above all, they are a confirmation of the extraordinary abilities of the men and women of our healthcare system who we will never stop thanking for the passion and commitment they put into their work at the service of the community.” «However – he continues – this ranking cannot leave us indifferent: the hospital facilities that attract more patients from other regions and that treat more difficult cases are located in northern and central Italy, forcing citizens of the south to move to have access to treatment and highly complex treatments”. “This is a gap – he concludes – which with differentiated autonomy and the absence of resources and investments by the government in public health is destined to become increasingly wider, with a consequent regression of the universal public health system. We hope that Minister Schillaci’s concerns will be followed by responses in this sense, putting all regions in a position to grow services and provide appropriate responses to people’s needs.”
