The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso: “The electoral law for the Municipalities has worked and is working very well”
“It is to be hoped that the united and compact centre-left, together with all the healthy forces of civil society, express their maximum commitment to counter Meloni’s desire to change the electoral law for the renewal of the municipal councils”. This was stated by the mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, who continues: “The electoral law for the Municipalities has worked and is working very well. So much so that in the last thirty years, it has guaranteed stability, governability and alternation. Today they would like to modify it by giving justifications that are completely unfounded because they refer, as stated by the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, to an unlikely increase in abstentionism in the double shift. False because the abstentionism which reached percentages approaching 50% in the last European elections is less impactful in these elections. The true fact is that the centre-right lost in the last administrative rounds, which is why it is trying to change the rules of the game by eliminating the run-off in the event of exceeding 40% in the first round, rather than the current 50%.
“A good deterrent to the rampant abstentionism in our country – insists Franz Caruso – would instead be the modification of the electoral law for political elections, offering citizens the opportunity to express their preference on candidates again. A hypothesis, the latter which would give life to a real democracy because the representatives in Parliament and the Senate would be chosen by the people and not in the closed rooms of parties and movements. Having said that, returning to Ignazio Larussa’s absurd proposal, it is hardly necessary to point out that the ANCI has already rejected the hypothesis of amending law 81 of 1993. An opinion that must be kept in mind in a logic of loyal collaboration between institutions. Furthermore, the Mayors of Italy hope for a single modification to law 81, i.e. the possibility of eliminating the limit of the second mandate, as happens with all other elective offices, including national and regional senators and parliamentarians, in order to give citizens/voters themselves have the possibility of judging the work of the outgoing mayor, precisely through the electoral consultation”.
