Rudolf Nureyev he was a dancer and choreographer with a charismatic and unique personality who left his mark on every stage he performed on, including that of the Verona Arena and the Verona Philharmonic Theatre. “Death in Venice”, inspired by the novella “Der Tod in Venedig” by Thomas Mann, is the famous ballet staged by Nureyev on the Veronese stages, demonstrating the strong artistic relationship that the city of Verona has always established with the major exponents of the arts and entertainment.

And it is precisely in Verona, from 27 to 29 June, in room T1 of the Zanotto centre, that the international conference will be held “Rudolf Nureyev and literature: dance, choreography and reception“to analyze his relationship with literature and how it influenced and inspired his art.

The conference, organized by Laura Colomboprofessor of French literature at the University of Verona, e Sidia Fiorato, professor of English literature at the University of Verona, will see the participation of young researchers and important scholars to investigate the relationship between literature and dance. Furthermore, numerous experts from prestigious institutions from Italy, France, Germany, Hungary and the United States of America will participate in the meeting.

The aim of the conference is investigate Nureyev’s report with literary texts, primary source of the topics of many ballets, and how this relationship with literature manifests itself in his ‘writing’ at the level of thought of movement, technique and performance, and awareness of the choreographic creation, also with regards to the development of his concepts over time. We aim to go beyond the extraordinary dancing skills and the hypnotic charm that Nureyev demonstrated on stage, which has always been the subject of countless comments, and to delve into aspects that are often less known, such as the importance of the literary aspect in his work he.

«This is a precious opportunity to combine our literary studies with dance, – he underlines Laura Colombo – in an intersemiotic and interdisciplinary relationship that will be able to bring our students together with international specialists, but which will be of interest to a wider audience, fascinated both by the magic of the dance performance and by the rediscovery and in-depth analysis, according to a particular slant, of very famous texts , including of course “Romeo and Juliet”».
