The theory of contrasts is the documentary made by Just Maria Films and produced by Duca di Salaparuta, dedicated to the cultural terroir of the coast between Bagheria, Aspra, Mongerbino and Casteldaccia. Preview at Villa Cattolica on Thursday 27 June

A tribute to the past and an embrace of the present, this is it “The theory of contrasts”the documentary made by the Director Carlo Loforti and produced by Duke of Salaparuta, which will be previewed Thursday 27 June in the spaces of Catholic Villaon the occasion of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Duke of Salaparuta. Renato Guttuso, Mimmo Pintacuda, Ignazio Buttitta, Ferdinando Scianna and Giuseppe Tornatore, different generations in comparison who grow up, live and represent the world of which they are part, which rises up, reflects and rebels.

Eighteenth-century villas and coastal landscapes, citrus gardens, although trapped in a contemporary urban disorder that has grown out of all proportion, stratified in time and space, continue to exercise their imaginative power, suggesting that Theory of contrasts that the city of Bagheria, between orange blossom and lime, offers to those who know how to look at it more deeply. It is a unicum of lives lived that, through painting, words and the vision of things, reconstructs – between necessary memory and new languages - the deposit of a very fertile land for Art and Culture. Salt of a frank and contradictory land, the same that has seen the proliferation of unique characters who with their talent have brought Sicily and its beauty to the world.

The director from Palermo brings it back to life through the words of the historian Rosario Lentini, of the anthropologist Ignazio Buttittaof the writer and screenwriter Paolo Pintacudaof the director Nico Bonomolo and paintersi Michele Ducato, Alessandro Bazan, Arrigo Musti.

The anger and ferment of the twentieth century gave vigor and meaning to a territory with a strong identity, small only in its borders. But history is not just a past, it is also a great present. In the place where it all began, Duca di Salaparuta, with this documentary made as part of a larger wine-cultural project inaugurated on the occasion of its 200th anniversary, recovers its roots, offers new horizons with a face-to-face valorization program art, culture, people’s lives.

In the wake of this contamination, with the milestone of 200 harvests, value has been restored to the painting of Renato Guttusoto the photography of Mimmo Pintacuda, to the vivid colors of the Sicilian cart painter Emilio Murdoloclearly present in the restyling of the company’s most representative labels.

“Duca di Salaparuta is deeply linked to Bagheria, it always has been – he explains Roberto Magnisi, Director of the Cantine di Duca di Salaparuta – ‘The theory of contrasts’ explores with visionary clarity the interweavings – material and immaterial – of a cultural Terroir that never ceases to bear new fruits and new ideas, calling everyone to grasp its projection towards new generations. Carlo Loforti, without rhetoric, relying on the expressive power of images and words that become testimony, reaches straight to the soul, retracing the human and artistic bonds that have animated a land naturally suited to beauty. We can only draw inspiration from it.”

The theory of contrasts, sponsored by the Municipality of Bagheria and the Municipality of Casteldaccia, was created by production company Just Maria. The presentation of the documentary will see the initial contribution of Joseph Prode which, after the screening, will give life to a talk with the protagonists of the documentary film.
