“We will immediately start a discussion table with the Local Health Authority and the University of Salerno to open the Autism centre. It is a measure of great social value. We have completed the work and acquired the land: we are ready. But they are already working on a great summer too: culture, entertainment, music, theatre. Appointments for every taste and sensitivity, proving the newfound appeal of the capital. And I will pick up where I left off with the city’s many tourism relaunch projects, starting with ‘Let’s rediscover Avellino'”. Laura Nargi, 40 years old, the first female mayor in the history of Avellino, after having won the run-off with 51.84% of votes for a civic coalition against the challenger Antonio Gengaro, stuck at 48.16% and candidate from Campo Largo, has already identified where to start or ‘resume’ your administrative action. She is married and graduated in law. For the last five years, she has been deputy mayor with responsibility for Commerce, Tourism and Personnel. Politically, she defines herself as a centre-left woman, she served in the Democratic Party until 2018 and then left it.
Even on the public works chapter, Nargi has already identified her priorities. “We have over 42 million euros available on the Pnrr alone, and over 90 million overall. Full speed ahead with the construction of the “Dante Alighieri” school campus, in Via Piave, and with the separate waste collection center, in the former slaughterhouse. Yes to the pole-free extension of the light metro route to Atripalda and Mercogliano, to give an eco-sustainable meaning to a useless work inherited from the past. And then the sports facilities and energy efficiency.”

Environment and sustainable mobility will be other central themes for the young mayor from Avellino. “We will put new eco-sustainable buses on the road and activate a new bike sharing system and 30 zones. But we will also slightly modify the restricted traffic zone in the historic centre, in particular by adding car parks and services to support pedestrianisation. And then the parks and air quality: now that the Region has finally recognized the Fenestrelle Park, we will have to move on to the implementation phase. At the same time, in Borgo Ferrovia, we will continue the Station Park project, with the redevelopment of the historical buildings, the annexed green lung and – as soon as the Region has completed the works on the tracks – the reopening of the station”.
As far as youth policies and social inclusion are concerned, Nargi assures that “we will immediately reactivate the Youth Forum but we will also establish a rent bonus for young people who will move to Avellino. And we want a city with more sports and neighborhood gyms. With the A 4 consortium company, we will give greater impetus to social policies: more tenders, more funds, more services for families, women, minors, the elderly and all the vulnerable”.
The new mayor of Irpinia also attributes central value to the dialogue with the community of mayors and administrators and with the ANCI. “For me, who am the first female mayor in the history of the city of Avellino, the Anci represents a fundamental collective tool alongside those who work for their territory on a daily basis. An association that gives support to administrators, at a time when mayors, too often, are left in the trenches to fight with cuts, with the serious problems of the municipalities they administer and a growing demand for services. The dialogue, therefore, will be constant.”
