Giro del Veneto: the first stage also cancelled

The weather situation in Polesine shows no signs of improving and the 32nd Tour of Veneto he is forced to give up even at the first stage which should have been held today with departure from Adria and arrival in Rosolina Mare.

At the meeting point in Adria everything was ready this morning: bikes, cars and teams already lined up for the official presentation and to get underway. And instead, almost like a bolt from the blue, the communication from the Prefecture of Rovigo arrived: authorization to compete in the stage was denied.

In Adria only a few drops of rain fall and even a pale sun emerges. The situation, however, is dramatic precisely in the area that the first stage of the Giro del Veneto should have crossed. The lower Polesine area, the Scardovari pocket and the Po Delta area see several towns flooded with swollen rivers and the sea no longer receiving water.

Racing in these situations would also be possible but it is inevitable to consider that the race could slow down or even prevent the passage of the rescue workers busy in these hours pumping water and, in some cases, also breaking the banks to allow the water to flow out without creating further damage to homes and crops.

In short, for the good of the territory it is right and necessary to stop and the organizational machine led by Adriano Zambon can do nothing but resign itself to the prefect’s provisions hoping that from tomorrow, with the move to Vicenza, the situation will improve and we can finally leave.

The frustration in the group and in the organization’s offices is palpable, as is the disappointment of the fans who arrived in Adria to applaud the protagonists of the Giro del Veneto but there are conditions in which the decision to stop is not a choice, but a one-way street unique without alternatives.
