The Tmb plant in Lentini, in the province of Syracuse, reopened this morning after the order arrived in the evening by the president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, to allow the disposal of waste. Yesterday afternoon, after the inspection by Arpa Sicilia in the Coda volpe district, a summit on the waste emergency was held in the prefecture of Catania which was attended by the regional councilor for Energy, Roberto Di Mauro, the prefect Maria Carmela Librizzi , the mayor Enrico Trantino, the head of cabinet of the president of the Sicilian Region, Salvatore Sammartano and the judicial administrators of Sicula Trasporti.

A waste emergency occurred in over 200 municipalities in Sicily after the closure of the Lentini plant which lasted for a few days: in front of the barred gates of the landfill a long line of compactors was created which were unable to deliver the rubbish and in many of the Municipalities concerned a health alarm was triggered due to the exposure of uncollected waste to the sun for days. In Catania, illegal open-air landfills have formed: citizens have accumulated waste of all kinds in every corner of the streets, for example in via Duca degli Abruzzi where the piles have invaded the bus stop or in the local market of Picanello. “It will take at least a week to recover the situation and dispose of the waste that is piled up in the streets, especially in the peripheral neighborhoods of the city,” warned the mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, asking citizens for a little patience. There is too much waste abandoned on the streets and near local markets and for this reason the team responsible for collection has been strengthened, always considering the time required for disposal in landfill which from today will see numerous vehicles queuing up to dump their waste .
