The meeting “Let’s give our best. Organ procurement, donation and transplantation. Reflections and objectives for the optimization of processes in SSR companies”. The event is promoted by the Department of Health and the Regional Transplant Center.
The conference
Institutional greetings will be given by the president of the Sicilian Region Renato Schifani, the regional councilor for Health Giovanna Volo, the coordinator of the Regional Transplant Center Giorgio Battaglia and the president of the Sicilian Regional Assembly Gaetano Galvagno. Speakers will include the director of the Strategic Planning department Salvatore Iacolino, the director of Dasoe Salvatore Requirez, the director of the National Transplant Center Giuseppe Feltrin, the head of operational coordination of the Crt Sicilia Antonio Scafidi. The director of the Operational Crt Vincenzo Mazzarese will moderate the meeting.
Transplants in Sicily
Thanks to organ transplants, many lives are born from one death. An example is the woman whose uterus was transplanted in Catania and was able to father a child. But in Sicily many Municipalities still do not inform citizens about the possibility of providing consent to organ donation when renewing the identity card. Furthermore, there is a widespread belief fueled by fake news: “If they admit me to hospital and find out from my health card that I am a donor, they won’t treat me so I die and they take my organs for transplant.”
To overcome these obstacles, Daniela Macaluso, governor of the 108Yb Sicily district of the Lions, Gioacchino Nicolosi, regional president of Federfarma, Giorgio Battaglia, director of the Regional Transplant Center, present the national secretary and provincial president of Federfarma, Roberto Tobia, and the president of The Order of Pharmacists of Palermo, Mario Bilardo, have signed an agreement at Palazzo dei Normanni, thanks to which it will be possible to receive in Sicilian pharmacies all the information useful to evaluate with knowledge of the facts and with conscience the possibility of donating, and also of signing consent to register in the national donor registry. With a similar agreement signed by Marco Anello, director of the regional school office, awareness campaigns will be carried out in Sicilian schools to encourage the spread of the culture of donation
