The ‘Poisons Out’ committee asks Occhiuto to suspend the waste plan

CROTONE – The ‘Poisons Out, Crotone wants to live’ committee delivered a letter this morning to the president of the Calabria Region in which it asks to suspend the effects and effectiveness of the new regional waste plan pending “the indispensable and necessary changes” . The reference is to the part in which the document opens up to the location of new landfills for hazardous waste in the Crotone area, in light of the industrial reclamation activities for which Eni Rewind continues to request the use of the Columbra landfill or the approval to the construction of a purpose-built platform on the former Pertusola area, with an eye in the meantime on Giammiglione where the Abruzzo group of the Maio family is always lurking. The delivery of the letter was announced this morning in a public initiative in front of the Prefecture, on the eve of the services conference scheduled for Wednesday 26 June in Rome.

“On this occasion – we read in the letter addressed to Roberto Occhiuto – we also underline the need, within the Security Council, for coordination of local institutions aimed at a single request that strongly counters Eni Rewind’s attempt to modify the Pob Phase 2 approved on 24 October 2019, as can be seen from the new proposal presented and placed on the agenda of the Council of Ministers on 26 June. This is also considering that nothing has changed to justify this modification, rather it is necessary to highlight the failure to comply with the requirements of the Ministerial Decree of 3 March 2020 on the reclamation”. The letter was sent for information to the regional council and to the majority and opposition regional councilors.

The committee recalls the “serious consequences” that the refusal to transfer dangerous waste elsewhere “could have for the territory of Crotone whose environment is already strongly compromised, and already subjected to strong epidemiological health pressures”, and urges “the extraordinary start of a strategic environmental assessment of the entire Crotone area”. Furthermore, it reiterates the request formulated in the observations sent to the Security Council regarding the possibility granted to the Regions to adopt, for example, more restrictive forms of protection if particular local situations require it, in order to ensure the minimum essential conditions for protecting the environment and human health, or request state intervention in the event of damage or threat of environmental damage through the Prefecture.
