MODENA. «Raise awareness and invest to prevent. These are the two main aspects on which we must immediately intervene.” The bad weather that is affecting the province in recent days requires us to turn the spotlight on again prevention and hydrogeological risk due to increasingly extreme atmospheric phenomena.

The risk of floods and landslides
The Lapam Confartigianato research office has developed research on the risk of flooding and landslides in the area, which shows that 41.3% of the surface area of the province of Modena is at medium risk of flooding, while 6.1% are at high risk. This means that 53.3% of the Modena population resides in areas with an “average” probability of flood events, while 3.1% in areas with a high probability. A risk which, in a medium severity scenario, involves 150 thousand Modena families, 71 thousand buildings and over 26 thousand businesses.
With regard to landslide events account for 13.5% of Modena’s surface area (this concerns in particular the Apennines area) it is high and very high risk. In a high and very high gravity scenario, the risk involves over 11 thousand people and almost a thousand companies (976 to be exact).

The analysis
«In Italy – concludes Gilberto Luppi, president of Lapam Confartigianato –, as highlighted by the data from our research office, each of us has had to shell out an average of 1,918 euros as economic losses caused by extreme events connected to climate change from the 1980s to today. The Emilia-Romagna region invests an average of 88.81 euros per capita in the environment every year, which includes the hydrogeological structure and soil conservation, the protection of landscape assets, forestry activities and the management of natural parks. Climate change is underway and we must foresee increasingly violent phenomena. Which is why we must act concretely and quickly.”
