THE CHURCH OF PORTONOVO REOPENS FROM MONDAY 1 JULYThe agreement between the Superintendence, the Marche Region and FAI Marche has been confirmed
In Portonovo the small Romanesque church reopens a stone’s throw from the sea. From next Monday 1st July the Church of Santa Maria will be open to visitors again thanks to an agreement for the use and valorisation signed by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino (owner of the property), by the Region Marche and the FAI Marche Regional Presidency.
For the entire month of July it will be open to visitors on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5pm to 7.30pm. In the month of August (including Ferragosto) the opening hours are on Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to 7.30pm. The opening will be guaranteed until the end of the year: in the month of September the Church will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm, while in the months of October and November it will be accessible on Sundays from 10.00 am to 12.30pm (including November 1st). In December it will be open on the 8th, 24th, 26th and 31st from 10:00 to 12:30.
Sunday Masses will be held in July and August at 9.30am.
Set between the blue of the sea waters and the green of the forest, the Church of Santa Maria, known by all as the Little Church of Portonovo, has always been very evocative for both locals and tourists. From an architectural point of view it also represents a unique example not only in the Marche and the Conero Riviera, but in the entire peninsula: only in Corsica and Normandy are there equally significant examples of Romanesque architecture.
The Portonovo Church will also be accessible to the public in conjunction with the national FAI events (FAI Autumn Days October 2024, FAI Days for schools November 2024) and extraordinary openings. The Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo will be opened by qualified guides and welcomed by FAI Volunteers.
