In June the demand for work increased in Lucca and Massa-Carrara, while it decreased in Pisa
The greatest opportunities are in tourism, despite the fact that the summer season has not yet taken off and June shows worse results than the previous year.
Viareggio, 25 June 2024. More than 11 thousand workers are required by companies in the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa in June 2024: a value substantially similar to that of 12 months ago. Given this, the difficulty in finding manpower increases even further. Among the sectors, industry presents positive signs in Lucca and Massa-Carrara, while Pisa, where the crisis of the fashion system weighs heavily, drags the respective provincial data downwards. Step forward for the construction job application. However, the demand for service personnel is less dynamic, due to the slowdown in tourism, even if restaurant workers are the most sought after profession everywhere.
This, in summary, is what emerges from the data collected for the month of June 2024 on a sample of almost 2,300 companies with employees in the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa from the Excelsior information system, a survey carried out by Unioncamere in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and developed by the Chamber of Commerce of North-West Tuscany and the Institute for Studies and Research – ISR.
The provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa are facing an unprecedented demand for work, as demonstrated by data recently published by the Excelsior Information System. With over 11,000 vacancies reported by businesses in June 2024, it is clear that the local labor market is experiencing a critical phase, characterized by significant challenges in sourcing skilled labor.
“The data we present today – states the President of the Chamber of Commerce of North-West Tuscany, Valter Tamburini – highlights a varied situation that reflects the different trends of the sectors. A crucial element, however, clearly emerges: the growing difficulty in finding qualified personnel. The growing difficulties in satisfying labor demand highlight the importance of targeted and timely interventions to facilitate the connection between education and work. In response to this challenge, we will shortly launch a tender, to which we have allocated 100 thousand euros, which will offer economic incentives to companies that participate in transversal skills and orientation courses in collaboration with upper secondary education institutions connected to the production chains: an element essential to guarantee the availability of qualified personnel in an increasingly competitive economic context.”
The demand for workers from Lucca companies remains positive also in the month of June, with 5,470 scheduled arrivals, an increase of +3% compared to a year ago. Companies foresee difficulties in finding the desired profiles for 44% of the planned revenues: an increase of 7 points compared to June 2023. Despite some critical issues in services, especially related to the weather for tourism (-6%), the work in Lucca shows significant growth in industry-construction-utilities (+34%) and positive signs in trade (+12%).
With the start of the summer season, the most requested professional figure is that of merchants and employees in catering activities, with 1,690 new hires. These represent 31% of all those scheduled in the province in the month. For 56% of these positions, having accumulated experience in the sector is essential. Furthermore, there is a preference for young people: in 36% of cases, people under 30 are preferred.
The growth in job demand from Massa-Carrara companies continues in June too: +4% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 2,120 hires. As in previous months, the mismatch between job supply and demand remains significant: there is difficulty in finding the desired profiles for 47% of the scheduled income (last year it was 45%). The increase in hiring expected for industry is particularly significant in construction (+8%), while trade (+30%) and business services drive the growth of services (+4%). Stability in accommodation and food services (+1%) indicates a sector that, despite the weather, continues to maintain robust labor demand.
With summer just around the corner, there is a high demand for operators and employees in catering activities. In June 2024, 750 new hires are expected for this profession, which represents 35% of the total provincial hires. However, 41% of these positions are difficult to fill, mainly due to a lack of candidates. Around a third of hires for this job (34%) require experience in the sector. Furthermore, 61% of these positions are specifically intended for young people up to 29 years old: a percentage 20 points higher than the average provincial job offers.
The demand for work from Pisan companies with employees marks a setback in the month of June, recording a -10%, bringing it to 3,450 hires. The difficulties in finding the profiles requested by Pisan companies during the month reach 53% of the positions offered: an increase of twelve points compared to June 2023.
Considering the sectors, June presents a significant contraction in the demand for labor in industry, in particular in the manufacturing and public utilities sectors (-43%), contrary to the growth observed in construction (+7%). The services sector, however, shows moderate growth with strong demand in personal services (+36%) and trade (+14%), while tourism (-4%) and business services (-14%) are experiencing a decrease in demand for labour.
The majority of hirings, equal to 910 units, corresponding to 26% of the total, concern operators and workers in catering activities. In half of the cases (51%) these figures are difficult to find, a value that is in line with the provincial average. There is a strong demand for experience in the sector, required in 74% of cases. Despite this, there is also a large demand for young people: 59% of positions are intended for people under 30, a percentage 20 points higher than the overall provincial average.
