water crisis, the opposition demands decisive answers from the administration –

Modica is in the midst of a water crisis and the opposition is attacking the municipal administration.

It all began a few days ago when the Iblea Acque Spa company announced that “following the monitoring carried out at the Cafeo spring serving the Municipality of Modica, a significant drop in the water level in the extraction tank emerged. In particular, the aforementioned circumstance determines a notable decrease in water availability at the source which is closely related to the period of extraordinary lack of meteoric contributions. In order to respect the resource it is therefore necessary to reduce the quantity of water withdrawn from the source”. This statement obviously raised numerous reactions.

The citizen coordination ‘South calls North’ he asks: “why have no effective measures been taken to address this emergency?” A more than legitimate question especially considering the fact that “The families– declares the Coordinator Giovanni Cavallo- they continue to struggle with supply disruptions as bills mount” But the coordination of South calls North also raises other questions: “What plans have been put in place to ensure access to water? What monitoring and maintenance of the water network has been done to identify leaks, breakages or inefficiencies? Why haven’t funds been invested to improve water infrastructure? Why hasn’t a long-term plan been developed to address the water crisis, considering climate change, population growth and other variables?” Coordinator Cavallo concludes “The water crisis cannot be ignored, and citizens deserve answers.”

He also intervenes on the issue Vito D’Antona of the Italian Left “In these days– declares D’Antona- documents have been issued regarding the water supply service in Modica: an ordinance from the Mayor which, due to the turbidity of the water in two tanks, prohibits the use of drinking water, unless previously boiled, in the neighborhoods of Modica Bassa and Modica Alta; a notice from Iblea Acque, the company that manages the water service for the entire province, which, due to a decrease in water availability at the Cafeo spring as a result of little rainfall, communicates that the quantity of water will be reduced taken; finally, a statement from the Municipality’s Ecology Office inviting citizens to adopt measures that can limit water consumption due to the reduction in water availability in the Cafeo spring.

Practically– continues D’Antona – the climatic conditions, characterized in recent months by reduced rainfall, could also transform what is currently a problem in Modica into a real emergency, as is already happening in other parts of Sicily. In order to prevent this from happening, D’Antona calls for action: “Administration-concludes D’Antona- in collaboration with Iblea Acque, urgently establish a permanent technical table, in which short and long-term solutions can be identified, such as the identification and use of new wells to support existing ones which present critical issues, in order to constantly guarantee a satisfactory level of water supply in all parts of the city”
