According to initial investigations, the crane became unbalanced on its side while moving a boat, falling on the worker. The rescue was useless.

Giovanni Guarascio, 69 years old from the province of La Spezia, died yesterday morning in Fiumaretta di Magra, in the municipality of Ameglia, after being crushed by a crane in a boat shed. According to initial investigations, the machinery would have become unbalanced on its side while moving a boat, falling on the worker. Medical personnel intervened on site with an ambulance and a medical vehicle: initially the man seemed conscious despite an open fracture in his left femur, then his condition worsened and he was intubated.

Guarascio died shortly after arriving by helicopter at the Santa Chiara hospital in Pisa. The technicians of the Psal, Prevention and Safety in the Workplaces Service, of the La Spezia ASL 5 and the Carabinieri are investigating the accident. The 69-year-old had been living in Ameglia for years after moving from Milan; in the past he had worked as a Navy officer, including on board the training ship Amerigo Vespucci. Once retired, he decided to continue working in the nautical world. He leaves behind a wife and a daughter.

CISL: “The emergency threshold has been exceeded in Liguria”

Luca Maestripieri, general secretary of CISL Liguria, Antonio Carro, head of Ast Cisl La Spezia and Andrea Tafaria, general secretary of Filca Cisl Liguria commented on yet another tragedy: “Liguria mourns another death at work, the sixth since the beginning of the year. massacre in the face of which demonstrations of indignation are no longer enough. We are close, in pain, to the family of the worker who died today in Fiumaretta. The safety situation in the workplace in Liguria has long since exceeded the emergency threshold the first 4 months of 2024 there were an average of 51 accident reports per day. The numbers, as always, do not require particular comments. Today we renew the appeal that we have been repeating for months: we need to increase inspections, promote a culture of safety , invest in prevention, entrust people with tasks that are as consistent as possible with their age, experience and qualifications. If we do not intervene on these fronts, the dramatic series of accidents at work will hardly be able to slow down its progress”.
