Luca Zaia addresses the growing phenomenon of baby gangs, reiterating the importance of a strong social pact to protect honest young people and fight illegality
VENICE – “We must protect the majority of our young people, who are committed to contributing to society by studying, working and participating in volunteering. To do this, a strong social pact is essential that demonstrates how the community intends to prevent uncomfortable situations, help those in difficulty and support the repentance of those who have made mistakes. However, it is important to recognize that firmness in responding to crimes is fundamental not only for social coexistence, but also for the growth, education and personal development of each individual.”
With these words, the president of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, spoke about the phenomenon of “baby gangs” and the presence, fortunately a minority, of young people involved in illegal activities. This phenomenon is reported daily by the police and recently highlighted by the police commissioner of Padua, Marco Odorisio, who reported a significant increase in minors arrested or reported.
Recognition to the Police Forces
“By thanking those who are committed to fighting crime for their daily work and the sensitivity demonstrated in this delicate area – continued the Governor – it is necessary to understand that they require attention and important reflection on this news. We are faced with a phenomenon that must be opposed and discouraged. With all the guarantees and cautions due to age, when faced with often serious crimes, the only response is firmness in prevention, accuracy in investigations and the certainty of a punishment proportionate to the guilt. Young age does not have to mean irresponsibility and impunity. This principle is a duty towards the work of the police forces, towards the many honest and committed young people, but also towards those who stumble upon justice, so that they can escape from the negative vortex and embark on an honest life before it is too late”.
