Udine’s moves against violence

After the violent episodes last weekend in Udine.

The episodes of violence which troubled Udine last weekend, with the stabbing in Via Roma and a fight in the center which led to the serious injury of Shimpei Tominaga, who was hospitalized in a coma after trying to break up the fight, have pushed the institutions to launch new safety measures.

The Public Order Committee which met this morning, in fact, decided to strengthen patrols in the centre and to give a crackdown on alcohol. Starting from the first initiative, the army patrol which now watches over the former Cavarzerani barracks in via Cividale will be moved to the heart of the city 24 hours a day; at the same time, they are expected mixed foot patrols, between police forces, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza, particularly on weekends, from Friday to Sunday. The idea, in fact, is to make the presence of the police clearly visible.

To this, we add the ordinance of the mayor Alberto Felice De Toni which will limit the sale of alcohol, often at the root of these brawls. In particular, throughout the territory sale will be prohibited of bottles or cans of alcoholic beverages in public establishments after 9pm while from 1am it will be prohibited also administration. There will be limits more stringent in the Borgo Stazione area, where sales will be banned from 6pm. The new rules are expected to remain in force for around two months. Furthermore, the Municipality is evaluating with Net the possible solutions to reduce the presence of glass which is increasingly used as an improper weapon.
