A day and a night licked by flames, a big fire that surrounds the whole country: this is what happened this weekend in Rocca Imperiale, municipality in the province of Cosenza on the border with Basilicata. The area surrounding the city of Rocca was affected by a large fire which lasted for days and whose aftermath, even this morning, is clearly visible.
The terrible fire, developed in the surrounding pine forest, it quickly reached the village threatening homes and causing terror among the inhabitants. A long column of smoke rose over the sky of Rocca for an entire day while some people left their homes. The volunteers immediately set to work to reduce the fire and try to at least put out the flames that were too close to the town centre.
Controversy, therefore, in the rescue operations: as the mayor said Giuseppe Ranu on social media, it seems that the help was slow in arriving: “Scenes from a movie. This is not a time for controversy and in fact I thank everyone but is it possible that two emergency services alerted at 3pm arrive at 7pm when everything already seems lost? When we are literally surrounded by flames? Take action immediately! More men, more equipment and timely relief.”
It’s still: “I heard from President Occhiuto whom I thank for his availability but think about providing the Municipalities with means for emergency interventions. With this organization you’re not going anywhere. A 4 hour delay is too much. I understand that the operational units were busy with other fires but this is how we DIE!”.
The fire, although with particular difficulty, was put out: the mayor also informed the community that “after discussions with the Calabria Region we managed to agree on the presence of a fire brigade station on site with constant checks on any outbreaks”.
