Hit-and-run at Monza-Resegone. Woman hit in Cernusco

Fear at Monza-Resegone where a 42-year-old driver from Torre de’ Busi first hit a woman who was providing assistance at the race and then a cyclist.

Only after the second accident, the motorist was chased and stopped by the mobile police and by a motorcyclist who was in the area. He was completely drunk and absolutely incapable of driving.

The events occurred around 0.30 am. «In the area of the Cernusco Lombardone intersection – says the councilor Antonio De Lucapresent on site together with the mayor Gennaro Toto to witness the passage of the athletes registered for the race in the centenary year – about fifteen volunteers from the national carabinieri association were available. The forty-year-old girl from Trezzo d’Adda was on the pedestrian crossing that meets on the provincial road coming from the Esselunga supermarket. At a certain point, the Audi A3 arrived and overwhelmed her. The man behind the wheel did not stop and continued his race for another hundred metres. When he arrived at the other traffic light, a second volunteer blocked him. “What are you doing?”, he shouted at him. The driver pressed the accelerator pedal and drove off, hitting a cyclist. Then he was chased by a motorcyclist and the carabinieri, who stopped him in Merate, near Via Terzaghi.”

The driver was immediately subjected to an alcohol test. He had a blood alcohol level much higher than the legal limit. He was immediately taken to the town hall, where he was identified by local police officers.

A complaint was filed against him for escape, driving while intoxicated and failure to help. His driving license was also revoked. «It is incredible that such a person was not arrested – commented the bitter mayor Gennaro Toto. – It is truly unacceptable that in a country like ours a person of that type can still circulate and run over two people.”

The volunteer who was hit first was rescued under code red and transported by ambulance to the Circolo di Varese hospital. «Her condition is serious but her life is not in danger nor is there a guarded prognosis. However, she suffered severe chest trauma and fractured some ribs”, says councilor De Luca. The consequences for the second victim are less serious. The 51-year-old cyclist was in fact transported under yellow code to the Lecco hospital.

On Sunday, the local police of Cernusco Lombardone carried out some investigations to reconstruct in detail the exact dynamics of the accident which could have had truly dramatic consequences.
