«Slowly we are starting to clear our role, even if there are coaches who still have prejudices and the kids are afraid that it will be discovered: they don’t want to make people believe they have problems. But it is unthinkable to train only the body, because it reacts to the mind. If the mind is blocked or in a state of anxiety, the body becomes rigid. It happened to Marcell Jacobs when he went to a race: his legs became stiff and he couldn’t run.”
If it also happened to Gianluigi Donnarumma: «Yes of course, he is a sensitive, good, emotional boy. And so sometimes he got nervous, but this work helped him to recognize himself, his strengths, to learn to enter the state of maximum concentration, the one in which he excludes everything external. And also to recognize all his emotions, without being afraid of fear anymore.”
On how to work on criticism: «We need to realize that this is normal and we shouldn’t give up our power to others: I trust my judgment and those who can be useful to me. I work on the little internal critical voice, which always requires us to be perfect to be accepted by others. And it’s the one that goes haywire when we suffer external criticism. And then, the more you are criticized, the more it means that others care about you: the fans pour expectations and emotions onto their heroes.”
