Cernusco Lombardone (Lecco), 23 June 2024 – Attack scene at the Promenade during the Monza–Resegone race. In the night a hit-and-run driver fell on a volunteer of the National Carabinieri Association who was carrying out law enforcement duties in Cernusco Lombardone, mowed it down and ran away. During the escape he then hit a cyclist. The police managed to stop him before he ran over anyone else. He was drunk.

The accident

The accident happened shortly after midnight, at the traffic light intersection between Provincial 342 dir, which is the former State Road 36, and the Provincial 54 Monticello-Paderno d’Adda. The traffic light system was deactivated and the intersection was manned by one fifteen volunteers because the centenary edition of Monza-Resegone was underway, the foot race at night from the Arengario di Monza to the top of Mount Resegone.

The scene of the accident in Cernusco Lombardone

They all wore it bibs and reflective jackets and the intersection was well lit. Among them there was also a 41-year-old volunteer from the National Association of Carabinieri Trezzo sull’Adda. She was positioned on the pedestrian crossing to regulate traffic, but a motorist behind the wheel of a ‘Audi A3 – who later turned out to be a forty-two-year-old from Torre de’ Busi – he knocked her over, threw her onto the bonnet and against the windshield which she smashed, dragging her for about twenty meters before throwing her onto the asphalt.

The 42-year-old initially slowed down, but when the colleagues of the woman he hit approached, he pressed the accelerator pedal and ran away. During the escape, a little further on, about 200 meters away from the first accident, he also hit a 53 year old cyclist. For the second time he didn’t stop and continued straight on his way. His run ended half a kilometer later.

He was blocked by another volunteer who was escorting the runners on his EI motorbike carabinieri of the Radiomobile branch. The emergency personnel immediately subjected him to a breathalyzer test. It appears he had an alcohol level at least four times the maximum permitted limit. The hit-and-run driver was so drunk he can’t even stay awake. He was reported free for failure to help and driving while intoxicated, because there are no terms for arrest. His driving license was also revoked.

In the meantime, the rescuers to assist the volunteer of the National Carabinieri Association and the cyclist. The Areu health workers took care of the firstair ambulance of Como. The 41-year-old hit her head and suffered several injuries. She initially truly feared the worst, but, despite the high-speed impact, she never lost consciousness.

After being stabilized, rescuers transferred her to the hospital Varese club. His condition is serious, but his life is not in danger. The cyclistwhose conditions immediately appeared less serious, was instead transferred by ambulance toLecco hospital. He too is not in danger.

To allow rescuers to intervene safely and carry out investigations, the agents of the Local police of Cernusco have temporarily the intersection closed where the first accident occurred, cordoning it off with red and white tape and positioning their cars across the road, as a barrier.

The mayor rushed to the scene Gennaro Totothe Security Councilor Antonio De Luca and other municipal administrators. “There were at least fifteen people patrolling the area – says councilor Antonio De Luca -. The intersection is also well lit. Although deactivated, the traffic light system was flashing orange lights. The pirate has fully centered on the volunteer of the National Carabinieri Association, under the eyes of other colleagues, spectators and many passers-by.

He put it on the hood and then he thrown 19 meters away. From what I understand it was drunk. Luckily he was blocked, we all hope he pays for what he did. What matters most, however, is that the two people she mowed down are not in danger of their lives, as we all feared, especially for the 41-year-old, because she was hit at high speed and made a bad flight before falling back to the ground on the asphalt”.
