In Sassari, prisoner and officer hospitalized in the same room

Rome, 22 June. – “Yesterday evening around 8.00 pm, at the Bancali prison in Sassari, an inmate while he was in the infirmary suddenly doused the premises and himself with flammable liquid, probably alcohol, which he managed to get hold of and set off the fire, starting a fire and attacking members of the Penitentiary Police Force who were trying to contain it. The inmate himself was burned, as were burns, fractures and bruises suffered by three policemen. But the truly singular thing is that, taken to the city hospital, the attacker and one of the attacked were admitted to the same room in the burns centre.”

This was reported by Gennarino De Fazio, General Secretary of the UILPA Penitentiary Police.

“With the ongoing prison emergency, 18 thousand officers missing, 14 thousand prisoners more than available places, suicides, murders, fights, rapes, devastation and much more, we thought we had seen it all, but evidently the harsh reality manages to overcome even the our wildest imagination. Now, perhaps, we expect that the hospitalized colleague, while he is there, will be responsible for supervising the prisoner”, adds the Secretary of UILPA PP sarcastically.

“More seriously, we ask the regional and national leaders of the penitentiary administration to intervene immediately with the health management of the Sassari hospital for the necessary allocation of the attacked policeman to a different room, aimed at also guaranteeing him the necessary safety and serenity. We express closeness and solidarity to him and the other members of the Corps involved, hoping for a speedy recovery”. concludes De Fazio.
