Vermouth di Torino Week, the history of the symbol of the Turin aperitif

Vermouth di Turin, the most famous flavored wine in Italy, boasts a fascinating history that has its roots in the royal court of Savoy. Its name derives from the German “wermut”, which defines Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood), the key ingredient in its recipe. Born in Turin in the nineteenth century, Vermouth quickly spread throughout the world in its two main variants: white and red. Its popularity was due to its unique and versatile taste, which made it an ideal ingredient for preparing cocktails. Vermouth di Torino is classified based on color (White, Amber, Rosé or Red) and sugar content. The production specification also provides for the “Vermouth di Torino Superiore” type, which refers to products with an alcoholic strength of no less than 17% vol., made with at least 50% Piedmontese wines and flavored with herbs – in addition to absinthe Piedmontese – grown or harvested in Piedmont. The Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino has the task of protecting, promoting and enhancing this Italian excellence. Its activities include supervision to ensure the correct application of the Geographical Indication denomination to consortium products, information to the final consumer and technical assistance and professional training for companies and producers.
