The transport of Saharan sand which affected Northern Italy starting from Wednesday 19 June 2024 does not let up. Indeed, on Friday 21st there was a peak which led to the exceeding of the healthy human limit of PM10 fine particles in many parts of the province of La Spezia. “After an initial decrease in pm concentrations during 20 June in which there were some rain events, the values rose again, recording, contrary to what happened on 19 June, in several locations in the region exceeding the daily limit value of the PM10”, says Arpal.

For the province of La Spezia the area most affected was Porto Venere, with the Punta Pezzino detector recording a daily average of 76 µg/m3. Across the gulf, a Fossamastra, the average was 70 µg/m3. Also significant is that of Sarzana (Pertini) equal to 60 µg/m3. Three other control units in La Spezia ended up beyond the threshold: Saint Cyprian 58 µg/m3, Maggiolina 58 µg/m3 e Viale Amendola 55 µg/m3.

For Porto Venere this is the fifth exceedance of the limit of 50 µg/m3 in the year. For all the other stations in La Spezia and Sarzana the fourth. The maximum limit established by law is 35.
