TARQUINIA – Sixteen original music, dance and theater events, set in some of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the Tarquinia area. This is the program of the Paesaggi dell’Arte 2024 festival, now in its fifth edition, scheduled for this summer.

Sixteen events set in some of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the Tarquinia area, places of particular interest: from the medieval architecture of the National Archaeological Museum, inaugurated in 1924 inside the splendid Palazzo Vitelleschi, to the Church of S. Maria in Castello, to the Parco delle Mura, to the painted Etruscan tombs of the Monterozzi Necropolis, a UNESCO cultural heritage site.

All the artistic productions scheduled have been chosen with the aim of enhancing the sites, promoting and multiplying their beauty, and being able to enjoy them with greater awareness. This year’s events also include a series of musical workshops.

The first two seminars, in collaboration with Labyrinth Italia, will take place from 28 to 30 June: Songs of the Eastern Sephardic diaspora – curated by Françoise Atlan – and Introduction to modal music – curated by Peppe Frana. Following this, from 3 to 7 July, the sixth edition of the Euterpe School for early music will be held, curated by Athena Katsanevaki and Rosa Fragorapti, with the participation of John C. Franklin. Finally, from 29 to 31 August, it will be the turn of the Singing and Silence seminar – curated by Markus Stockhausen.

For the first concert of the festival, Entre la rosa et le jasmin, scheduled at the National Archaeological Museum on 30 June at 9.30 pm, Françoise Atlan and Peppe Frana will offer a fascinating exploration of the repertoire of songs in the Ladin language of the Sephardic communities present in the large urban centers of the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. In the following weekend, two musical events are planned with thematic visits – Music and Myths of Ancient Greece I and II – at the National Archaeological Museum (6 July, at 6.30pm and 9.30pm – 7 July at 6.30pm) together to the teachers and students of the Euterpe School.

At the Chiostro S. Marco (13 July, at 7.30 pm), the refined guitar texture of Peter Finger will be the protagonist of the solo concert Acoustic Guitar Sunset. The following week, yet another thematic visit with musical events at the National Archaeological Museum (20 July, at 6.30pm and 9.30pm) – The Cardinal’s Rooms – where original songs from the era of Cardinal Vitelleschi will be performed, performed by Ute Goedecke and Per Mattsson. The following night, at the Necropoli dei Monterozzi (21 July, at 9.30 pm), with the full moon, a visionary performance by Paolo Angeli entitled Cumpendiu will be on stage.

Three concerts are scheduled for the last weekend of July, all in the square of the Church of S. Maria in Castello: Maura Guerrera and Malik Ziad will present their project Spartenza (26 July, at 9.30 pm), Lili Refrain will return to Tarquinia to celebrate his Ancestral Ritual (27 July, at 9.30 pm) and the Gabriele Coen Quintet will perform the songs from the Sephardic Beat project live (28 July, at 9.30 pm).

After a break in August, this edition of the festival will end with three more concerts: at Parco delle Mura (31 August, at 9.30pm), with the trio Between Earth and Sky – formed by Markus Stockhausen, Fabio Mina and Francesco Savoretti – which will propose a musical navigation between Matter and Spirit, and in the internal courtyard of the National Archaeological Museum, where it will be possible to listen live to the new record production by Prank & Giorgio Li Calzi – Touching Hands – (7 September, at 9.30 pm) and the surprising repertoire of violinist Anaїs Drago (8 September, at 6.30 pm) with her solo project Minotauri.

The Paesaggi dell’Arte festival is a project financed by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Tarquinia, by the Lazio Region, Directorate of Culture and Youth Policies, pursuant to the call for the valorisation of cultural heritage through live entertainment, with the collaboration of the Archaeological Park of Cerveteri and Tarquinia.

The artistic direction is entrusted to the producer and archaeomusicologist Emiliano Li Castro. Information and reservations can be requested at the InfoPoint in Tarquinia (Barriera San Giusto), tel. 0766-849282 or by sending an email to [email protected]
