PESCARA. The Region and the teacher have already committed a gaffe Enrico Melozzi they run for cover. «Regarding the search for volunteers for the organization of the next edition of the Notte dei Serpenti, it is specified that, as per ministerial indications, all the young volunteers who are selected will receive an attendance fee as reimbursement of expenses, will be entitled to vouchers meal and will be insured against accidents and illnesses related to carrying out the voluntary activity”. The note arrived yesterday after a storm of criticism hit social media about the concert on 20 July in Pescara due to the notice of recruitment of volunteers “free of charge”.
On the political front, the regional secretary of the Young Democrats, Saverio Gileno, immediately expressed his firm opposition «to this exploitative practice disguised as a training opportunity. The Abruzzo Region allocates hundreds of thousands of euros for this initiative, yet the free work of young self-driving volunteers is requested. It is unacceptable that, in a context in which significant public resources are invested, girls are asked to work without any form of compensation”, declared Gileno, “we invite all young people to reflect on this situation. Work, in any form and context, must be fairly remunerated. Offering experience and training cannot justify the absence of financial compensation. We ask the Region and the organizers to immediately review this decision and to provide fair financial recognition for all the young people involved in the organization of the event.” The Notte dei Serpenti, created to celebrate the musical tradition of Abruzzo, was financed by the Region with 200 thousand euros per year, for a total of 600 thousand euros. Volunteers must have a car and come from the province of Pescara.
The roles available are runners (logistical support and management of commissions), backstage collaborators (behind the scenes assistance during rehearsals and the show), artist accompaniment, catering (help in preparing and distributing meals for the team and artists) and general production support.
