The alleged murderer of Alberto Fiori, 75 years old, hit in the abdomen by a gunshot in Villafranca di Verona after a brawl between carnies degenerated into tragedy on the evening of Wednesday 19 June.
The alleged murderer, Athos Columbus56 years old, after an initial escape attempt he showed up spontaneously together with his lawyer at the Mantua Carabinieri barrackswhere he was notified of the detention ordered by the public prosecutor Elvira Vitulli with the charge of murder and aggravated assault.
The murder weapon has not yet been recovered. The analysis of testimonies and videos will be decisive in establishing how many shots were fired. The Municipality has decided to cancel the Saints Peter and Paul fair, scheduled for 28 to 30 June 2024.
Shootout between carnies in Villafranca
An argument over the best place to locate your business at the Saints Peter and Paul fair turned into tragedy. The brawl between carnies, Wednesday evening in Villafranca, began around 9pm in Piazza del Castello, where the attractions had already been installed. During the first clashes, which involved around ten people, a young carnie was seriously injured and taken to the hospital in Verona Borgo Trento.
When it seemed that the situation was under control, those involved moved in Olympia Avenuein front of the municipal swimming pools, where the carnies’ caravans are parked, the argument reignited and the situation degenerated further.
One of those present, Athos Columbuspulled out a gun and shot against the 75 year old Alberto Fiori, who was seriously injured and transported to Villafranca hospital, where he died on the morning of June 20, 2024.
“This morning, at 6, my sister called me and told me that our brother – Alberto Fiori – was very ill. But we didn’t think he would die”, one of the victim’s sisters told Tgr Veneto yesterday.
In the same shootout, another 49-year-old carnie was seriously injured in the leg and was treated at Villafranca hospital.
