The mugging took place late on Wednesday afternoon in the city centre, in Piazza Shelley. We are a stone’s throw from the Market and two steps from the Promenade. The victim is a thirty-year-old, originally from Romania; she who, after having withdrawn from the ATM, was walking, with her phone in her hands in which she had hidden the money, along Via Matteotti. There she was approached by a young man, probably of North African origin, on a bicycle. The man may have been keeping an eye on her; and for this reason he would have thrown himself against her. She didn’t let go of the loot right away, that’s why she was dragged. Until the cell phone slipped out of the cover, where the young woman had put the cash. Banknotes that the criminal found in his hands and which he quickly passed to an accomplice. Then together, the two ran away, losing their tracks. A young man, also of foreign origins, intervened in the woman’s defense but was hit by the criminals without being able to stop them.

The Carabinieri from the Viareggio station intervened on site and, thanks to the testimonies collected and the images taken by the video cameras in the area, are working to trace the identity of the perpetrators of the attack. While concern is growing among citizens about small incidents of petty crime.
