Pierattelli Architetture renovates Villa il Gioiello

06/21/2024 – In Florence, memories of the past join contemporary functions in the restyling project of Villa il Gioielloby the Florentine studio Pierattelli Architecture. As a backdrop to the spaces reinterpreted in a balanced play of nuances and textures, works of art signed by artists of the caliber of Ettore Spalletti, Jannis Kounellis And Mario Schifano.

Located near the historic center of Florence, Villa il Gioiello – which is spread over five floors occupying an area of 700 m2 – stands among the hills of the city, along a narrow and winding road bordered by characteristic irregular stone walls.

Pierattelli Architetture preserves the atmosphere and ancient soul of the place by creating a single-family residence with timeless charm, where the presence of multiple works of art signed by important figures of the 20th century tell a constantly evolving story.

On a structural level, the architects’ intervention restores and enhances the original elements, giving a new character both to the interiors and to the outdoor garden with infinity pool covered in white quartzite, designed and expanded in collaboration with the landscape architect Gianni Medoro, a pupil of Pietro Porcinai .

Villa il Gioiello: between past and present

If on the one hand elements of the time remain visible – from the external loggia overlooking the greenery to the parquet floors of recovered solid teak arranged in tiles, from the arches to the wooden beams up to the large living room with vaulted ceiling – on the other the various environments change face through a play of surfaces and a combination of natural materials such as marble, travertine and teak and walnut wood. As large as they were at the time, the rooms on the ground floor house the areas intended for conviviality: the double living room is located in a double-height hall surmounted by fascinating cross vaults; the typically Tuscan cuisine has been revisited by creating a material contrast between the warm tones of Teak, with an artisanal flavour, and the refined tones of stone which gives a linear and more contemporary touch; the dining room, open onto the landscape thanks to three arched windows, includes a wooden and corten staircase designed by Pierattelli Architetture.

Colours, shapes and materials

Colors, shapes and materials were chosen in accordance with the specificities of the project. Most of the furnishings were designed by the architects: in the bathroom and in the living area where, for the reading room, a large geometric bookcase in Canaletto walnut was inserted with brushed brass metal sides and shelves illuminated by indirect light. On the mezzanine floor, where rooms such as the cinema room and a hi-fi room have been added, a bookcase designed to accommodate a professional audio system stands out. The charming master bedroom, on the first floor, opens onto the panorama of the Tuscan hills and onto the loggia with an intimate and refined outdoor lounge. A staircase in Canaletto walnut with transparent parapet designed by Pierattelli Architetture characterizes the space of the master bedroom, while the flooring here too is in reclaimed wood arranged in tiles, surrounded by an Indian teak frame.

The attention to detail also shines through in the Canaletto walnut wood paneling on the ceiling and walls, where a hidden door leads to the walk-in closet. For moments of relaxation and well-being, a gym with sauna has been located in the basement. The attic, reachable on the third level via the extension of the existing internal staircase, houses a guest apartment with a bedroom with overhead light, bathroom and living area. This space was created thanks to the creation of a new steel floor passing over a good part of the first floor which allowed us to increase the surface area of the villa.
