Accidents at work in Sicily grow by 4.2% in a year. The data illustrated in Palermo during the safety tour – Il Fatto Nisseno

A slight increase in accidents at work in the first four months of 2024. This is what is recorded in the Inail data which were presented this morning in Palermo during the regional tour on safety in confined spaces in Sicily, thanks to which over 200 operators were trained, who stopped at the Manelli Impresa Spa construction site.

In particular, as of 30 April 2024, there was a modest increase in the accident phenomenon on the island (+4.2%, from 8,227 to 8,572), slightly higher than the national one, equal to 3.6% (from 187,324 to 193,979). The increase is common to all three sectors; in the industry and services sector there was an increase of 4%, in agriculture 8% and in the sector on behalf of the State an increase of 3.6%. The three provinces that recorded the highest accident trend in January 2024 are: Catania, with 2,361 complaints (27.5% of the regional total), Palermo with 1,955 complaints (22.8% of the regional total) and Messina with 970 complaints (11.3% of the regional total).

There were 13 reports of fatal workplace accidents presented to the Institute in Sicily in April, a slight decrease compared to April 2023 (equal to 14). In the three-year period 2020-2022, the statistically consolidated workplace accidents that occurred in Sicily within storage, packaging devices, silos, tanks, cisterns and tubs were 45. The data were illustrated during the regional tour promoted by Inail and Panormedil which stopped in Palermo and which used the simulator to create free educational and training courses for workers who operate in confined environments through a reproduction of the possible risk situations typical of these working contexts, testing work methodologies and procedures safety and emergency for the recovery of injured operators.

“We have always reiterated – explain the president and vice president of Panormedil Cpt, Scancarello and De Vardo – how fundamental training is to safeguard the safety of workers and the news of recent months, with the death of workers in Casteldaccia, confirms this that unfortunately protective devices are not used, that adequate safety procedures are often not applied”
