PARSIPPANY, NJ, June 20, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Acrow, a leading international bridge designer and contractor, announced the installation of one of its modular steel bridges as an interim transit solution of pedestrians and cyclists and as a support for the underground pipes during the reconstruction works of the Secula Bridge over the Bacchiglione, in the province of Vicenza.

After long years of service, the bridge over the Bacchiglione river along Provincial Road 20 which connects the town of Secula to the capital Longare was no longer structurally compliant according to current regulations. Of particular concern were the vertical alignment of the bridge and the intermediate piers serving the three-span structure, which were not hydraulically compatible in the event of a flood of the waterway. After having evaluated the possible options for a long time, it was decided to opt for the demolition and subsequent reconstruction of the bridge, as the road artery is considered crucial for the local road system and, more generally, for the road system of the eastern part of the Vicenza area. The new single-span structure, in addition to guaranteeing greater vehicular flow, is more solid and more suitable for the floodplain area than the existing bridge, also integrating a cycle-pedestrian lane.

While for vehicular traffic it was possible to take advantage of diversions on alternative roads during the reconstruction works, for the transit of pedestrians and cyclists it was preferred to opt for a temporary bridge, for safety reasons and in consideration of the high number of users of the old structure. Carraro, the contracting construction company, proposed a temporary modular cycle-pedestrian bridge in Acrow steel, which, after evaluation by the managing body and contracting authority Vi.Abilità and the Municipality, was deemed the optimal solution for the project . The Acrow bridge has a length of 48 meters, with an internal width of 2.44 meters. The bridge was also designed and equipped with external supports on both sides, to accommodate the pipes of public services (water, gas, sewerage and telecommunications networks), which had to be temporarily diverted.

The bridge components were delivered at the end of January 2024 to the construction company’s warehouse. After a few weeks, once the pre-assembly was completed, the four 12-metre segments were transferred to the construction site and connected to each other, for a total length of the bridge of 48 metres. On March 7, the structure was lifted and installed on the supports, with the help of two 200 and 500 ton cranes; on April 24, after load tests and the transfer of underground services, the bridge was inaugurated and opened to traffic. The structure will remain in service until the completion of the new bridge and the attached cycle/pedestrian lane, and until the restoration of the underground services on the main bridge, for an estimated duration of the works of approximately 12 months.

“Acrow’s engineering excellence and dedication in providing targeted assistance and consultancy during all phases of the project are the best guarantee of technical functionality and economic efficiency of the proposed solution,” declared Marco Mazzucato, Country Director of Acrow Italia. “As demonstrated by the solid and profitable collaborations with contracting companies, Acrow is able to provide turnkey solutions for various projects, offering valuable added value to both contracting companies and local public bodies”.

“In addition to vehicular applications, Acrow’s versatile modular bridges can be used to provide safe pedestrian transit in a variety of contexts,” said Paul Sullivan, President – International Business at Acrow. “Our bridges, available for purchase or rental, are easy to install and are manufactured from high-strength galvanized steel; designed for a wide range of applications, they guarantee a useful life of between 75 and 100 years or more”.
