ASTI «We welcome with satisfaction the news that the Piedmont Regional Administrative Court in its hearing on 19 June definitively confirmed the suspension of the plan which envisaged a massacre of 1,240 roe deer in the province of Asti without any proof of the accidents attributed to them and with less damage to agriculture How laughable”, comments Massimo Vitturi, national manager of Lav Wild Animals (Anti Vivisection League).

«In recent days farmers have launched an attack on wild animals. Using the damage to agriculture as a pretext and reporting figures that have no scientific corroboration, they are calling for the extermination of any species”, explains the association. «When you analyze the details you discover, as in the case of Asti, that the damage attributable to animals is negligible, a nullity when compared to that attributable to climate change. The plan prepared by the Province of Asti reported that only in eight of the forty-one areas surveyed in 2023 had damage to agriculture attributable to roe deer been reported, while no data was reported regarding road accidents that would have been caused by roe deer”.

The definitive suspension also set the date of the hearing on the merits which will be held on 2 April 2025. Lav also announces that it will evaluate further interventions by reporting the proceedings to the Court of Auditors with reference to the fiscal damage resulting from the illegitimate killing of the roe deer, similarly to what happened in 2018 when, following the complaint by Lav, the president of the autonomous province of Bolzano, together with one of his officials, found himself forced to pay out almost a million euros for the damage caused to the community by having allowed the killing of wild animals in violation of national protection regulations. Just as could happen in the Province of Asti, considering that the culling had not been suspended despite the two warnings sent by Lav, in which the serious illegitimacy of the plan was highlighted which has now led to its suspension thanks to the intervention of the TAR .
