At home, the market for weapons, explosives and drugs

Thursday 20 June 2024 – 12.40pm

The Carabinieri of the Company of Cecina and the Company of Livorno with the help of two dog units, trained for explosive and drug searches by the Carabinieri Dog Center of Florence, arrested a 62-year-old man from Livorno in flagrante delicto, with a police record relating to drugs and property, seriously suspected of several crimes.

A few days ago, as the Carabinieri explain in a note, the military, following more stringent controls to monitor but above all to combat illicit contexts and movements in general, with particular attention also to the presence of clandestine weapons in the Livorno area, and to verify some suspicions that had always developed during the activities of the external patrol services, broke into a house in Livorno where signs of suspicious presences had been recorded, with the hypothesis that unreported or even clandestine weapons and ammunition could be found.

The operation, conducted on the initiative of the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Livorno, began in the early hours of the morning a few days ago.

Once they entered the house and its surroundings where the 62-year-old lives, the military searched the man and the house and found a large number of weapons.

In detail, the carabinieri found a single-barreled rifle cal. 12 Beretta was found to be stolen; several knives; a telescopic truncheon and a “nunchaku”; ammunition, 66 cartridges of different calibers and explosives, 15 packages containing multiple shots of fireworks of various species whose possession had never been reported.

These are tools believed to be available in common criminal contexts but no less harmful, functional to criminal actions that would certainly undermine legality in the urban and peripheral contexts of Labronia.

The outcome of the activities also allowed the Carabinieri to trace and enrich their criminal knowledge base in the area, contextualising and crystallising the elements collected in the context of the crimes of receiving and illegal possession of weapons and explosives.

As part of the same judicial police operations, the presence of narcotic substances was not missing from the Army’s call; they also found 35 grams of hashish in the house; 70 grams of white powder divided into three bags and attributable to cutting substance; packaging materials (plastic bags of various types); 5 precision scales and a notebook, or a sort of “ledger” containing notes that could be traced back to the list of deliveries of narcotics to the various customers of yet another “drug center” set up in the house.

Finally, there was also a fake 50 euro banknote in the house, which also earned the man a charge for the crime of introducing and spending counterfeit money.

As further proof that the 62-year-old was dedicated to criminal activities and that he derived his livelihood from them, objects of common use were found but which, due to the specific context, are considered suitable to be used in illicit activities and for this reason they too kidnapped.

This is, in particular, a rubber carnival mask depicting a zombie; a pair of transceivers; some license plates for vehicles and mopeds; some smartphones and a health card registered to a third person.

All material instrumental to criminal initiatives in the context of predatory crimes, which was subjected to seizure with a view to carrying out any useful technical-scientific investigation for possible investigative developments to be systematized also with previous criminal events that have affected the territory.

At the end of the validation hearing, the judge of the Court of Livorno ordered the precautionary measure of house arrest and control with the electronic bracelet.
