It was a Black Wednesday that just passed. Two fires broke out in Naples, on the Camaldoli hill, and in Aversa, inside some building material warehouses. The fire that broke out in the Caserta area, due to which an enormous black cloud visible for kilometers arose, was put out by the Fire Brigade after hours of intervention. “Following the fire in a building materials warehouse around 12.00 yesterday in Viale Europa in Aversa, Arpa Campania intervened at the request of the Fire Brigade. Monitoring of air quality also continues through the regional monitoring network with Arpac’s fixed stations. The fire was put out but still has combustion fumes. The results will be released as soon as they are available.” is the Arpac note.

The fire on the Camaldoli hill

Since yesterday afternoon a fire almost certainly of malicious origin has developed on the Soccavo side of the Camaldoli hill in Naples. Aircraft had to intervene to combat the flames as it is a wooded area which is difficult to reach with launches connected to tankers. Over the hours, the fire continued to spread dangerously throughout the area, even touching some homes.

On the Camaldoli hermitage, for safety reasons, the nuns were removed from their historic homes. One night was not enough to completely tame the flames which continue to burn on the hill and also spread to the side overlooking the Pianura district.

“The fire on the Camaldoli is probably arson”, announced Mayor Manfredi

The fire that developed in the Camaldoli area of Naples yesterday afternoon “It’s probably malicious and makes us reflect on the need to also protect the forest heritage of our city”. Thus the mayor Gaetano Manfredi which he also explains he has “I spoke to the fire brigade commander: the fire started yesterday at lunchtime and he told me that there were no more important air vehicles available” immediately.

Manfredi adds that “This is what I was told – he said – and therefore only the helicopters intervened”. Moreover “Tonight there was a very complex situation on the Camaldoli because the fire front changed direction many times, so this made the extinguishing operations very difficult”. During the course of the morning, three Canadairs then stood up on site.
