Bologna, via Libia closed from 24 June due to the construction site of the Ex Veneta and the burial of the tracks: buses and traffic change

A work awaited for decades, at least since the nineties, which is now about to come to fruition in the Cyrenaica area and which will lead to the elimination of five level crossings in the city and a redevelopment of the entire affected area.
Get to the heart of it the undergrounding of the urban section of the Bologna-Portomaggiore railway line in the San Vitale-Rimesse and Via Larga areas, which will lead to continuation than what has already been done in the past with the Bologna Centrale-Zanolini-via Fabbri section.

The works for the undergrounding of the Ex Veneta

The first step of the work, which as illustrated by Fabrizio Maccari, Fer technical area manager, should be completed by 2026, will be the interruption of via Libia from the intersection with via Scipione dal Ferro starting from June 24th and until Decemberso as to allow the movement of sub-services, the creation of structural works of the tunnel and the new underground stop. Thus continuing the existing Zanolini gallery, it will be possible to eliminate the level crossings in via Fabbri, Libia and Rimesse, as well as – subsequently with the works of the second section – those in via Cellini and via Larga (the via Larga stop will be in the trench).

The redevelopment of Cyrenaica

But this project, as underlined by the mayor, Matteo Lepore and the regional transport councilor, Andrea Corsini, «is not only the undergrounding of the railway section”, because its objective is also that of “urban redevelopment and regeneration”. Cyrenaica and the San Donato-San Vitale district: green areas, cycle paths and public areas will be created on the land left free by the tracks. «This is an intervention much awaited by citizens – added Lepore –, the result of decades of petitions: it will improve the life of the community”.

Discounts and aid for those who will suffer the inconveniences of the construction site

If expectations are positive, in the meantime we will have to deal with the inconveniences of construction sites and rail transport: «As a Region we have decided to give a signal – added Corsini –: on Monday the resolution to apply a 10% discount will arrive in the council. on the season ticket for those who use the train on routes where rail circulation is prohibited. Once the intervention is completed, we plan to upgrade the line.” Compensation has also been provided for residents who will be affected by construction sites. The intervention is financed with 76 million euros, of which 51.8 from state resources, 18.5 from the Region and 5.4 from the Municipality.

How traffic circulation and bus diversions change

From 24 June Via Libia will be interrupted at the intersection with Via Scipione dal Ferro, with interruption of vehicular and pedestrian permeability to allow the movement of underground services and the construction of the structural works of the railway tunnel and the future new train stop.
The work schedule includes the reopening of the Via Libia axis and the restoration of normal circulation in the surrounding area for the start of month of December.

From Via Emilia Levante and Via Toscana we recommend reaching Via Libia following the route Via Azzurra – Via Rimesse – Via Sante Vincenzi.

From Via San Donato, Via Massarenti can be reached from Via Bentivogli.
