PIEDMONT | Carmagnola National Pepper Fair 2024: an explosion of flavours, culture and tradition

An unmissable event that celebrates one of the most prized and characteristic products of the area. It is the National Pepper Fair in Carmagnola, in the province of Turin, which is scheduled for the 75th edition from 30 August to 8 September 2024, offering ten days of celebration, culture, gastronomy and fun for the whole family.

(TurismoItaliaNews) The Peruvian pepper plant arrived in Carmagnola at the beginning of the twentieth century and was introduced into the cultivation of the place by the far-sighted horticulturist from Borgo Salsasio Domenico Ferrero, immediately becoming a valuable cultivation and today represents a fundamental resource for agriculture and the economy.

A long history of excellence and quality. The Carmagnola pepper, grown in the fertile lands of the province of Turin, is known for its distinctive organoleptic characteristics. Available in different varieties, including the Quadrato, the Lungo known as Corno di Bue, the Trottola, the elongated Quadrate and the Tomaticot, this vegetable stands out for its thick pulp, sweet flavor and high vitamin C content. Cultivation follows rigorous traditional and sustainable methods, guaranteeing a high quality product that respects the environment and ancient agricultural practices.

The Carmagnola pepper is a versatile ingredient that is widely used in the kitchen, both in traditional and more innovative recipes. From typical Piedmontese dishes such as bagna càuda, to the more modern appetizers, first courses, second courses and side dishes, the pepper adds a touch of color and unique flavor to every preparation. Thanks to its natural sweetness, it is also perfect for preserves and sauces, helping to create dishes with an authentic and unmistakable taste.

Each type has its own preparation to enhance its flavour, from the square suitable for raw consumption or as a filling for baked preparations to the elongated square also called Bragheis, which ripens extremely early and is versatile and therefore suitable for all uses in the kitchen and ideal for baking. The tumaticot, on the other hand, with a rounded shape and flattened at the ends like a tomato, thanks to its thick pulp is suitable for the preparation of appetizers and for preservation in refined and tasty versions, even sweet and sour, while the long variant, called ox horn, has a cone shape and very elongated, it is ideal for peperonata and preservation because thanks to its compact pulp it holds up excellently when cooked. Finally, the Trottola, heart-shaped with a slightly everted tip or truncated tip, is an extremely versatile quality that ensures high yields in all culinary preparations.

The Carmagnola pepper has also obtained important recognitions, including the quality mark of the Carmagnola Pepper Consortium and the recognition as a Traditional Agri-food Product (Pat) by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. These certificates certify the excellence of the product and guarantee its origin and quality.

There will be a rich schedule of events that will accompany the public in discovering the excellence of the territory and agriculture. In addition to the display of all the variations of peppers, it will be possible to participate in show cooking, guided tastings, real food and wine tours, all surrounded by shows and entertainment for gourmet lovers, professionals and for an audience of all ages. The musical festival of Il Foro Festival is also confirmed for 2024, with important guests from the music and cabaret scene on the national scene, a true festival within the Festival, which every year is increasingly loved and appreciated by the public, with a selection of artists and of musical genres capable of meeting all tastes, from pop music to rock, from pop proposals to renowned singer-songwriters, as well as the most well-known and entertaining comedians on both television and theatre.
