From Umbria to London with a dream in your pocket

At 15 she had already reached the podium of the ‘Cioccolentino’ singing competition with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’. And it was already clear that that little girl, from Preci in Umbria, would have come a long way, thanks to her voice, which many compare to that of Adele.

Michela Brandimarte is now 27 years old. She has lived in London for 11 years. Her challenge after challenge, falls and rises, her first single has been released these days. It’s called ‘If I’: it can be listened to on the platforms, but she hopes it will reach the ears of a record company, ready to put its own label on it.

“I left for the United Kingdom as soon as I turned 18 and finished the Academy – she says –. I wanted to study music and refine the art of singing. I immediately looked for a job to support myself, I didn’t speak a word of English. Then I started looking for a teacher. I found her, very good, she also has collaborations with Lady Gaga. First of all she told me that there was a lot of work to do, starting from the diet too much pasta. Pasta makes you lazy”, he pointed out to me without mincing words.”

How was this single born?

“It came to light during the pandemic, in collaboration with a producer friend, recorded in his home studio. I wrote the lyrics and directed the arrangement.”

What is the song about? “It’s about when you go through a really bad time and hit rock bottom. Then you get back up. It’s called resilience.”

Some producers will have noticed you…

“I have several labels including Sony and Marshall Record who are keeping an eye on me. This is the first song I wrote after losing my voice following an operation to remove a cyst on my vocal cords.”

Have you ever thought about talent? In Sanremo?

“My teacher got me an audition for the British version of you should notice my voice. I’m a Sagittarius, I don’t give in to compromises. Even Maria de Filippi would have wanted me at Amici, but I’m interested in making it for the talent and not for what’s around.”

Who do you like in our music scene?

“I think the Italian genre is a bit copied from America. Italy lacks the pain, the pathos in the song. However, Mina remains a myth.”
