PESARO – They escaped from Pesaro last November and were found in Switzerland. Thus ends the escape of Emilian Bici, 43, held in prison for attempted murder together with Ermelinda Spahiu, 38, both Albanian. Last Monday they were stopped at a checkpoint in Switzerland by the Swiss police. Thanks to a cross-check, carried out in collaboration with the Italian border police in Ponte Chiasso, it was possible to identify the two fugitives. They had escaped last November 14th during their external work on a farm in Pesaro.

They were serving their sentences in Villa Fastiggi prison in Pesaro, but were part of a reintegration program that allowed them to work outside the prison facility for part of the day. But during one of these moments of work, the two ran away. A manhunt that lasted weeks was born. But even after the first few days, the authorities continued to keep their antennas up. The identification of the couple occurred thanks to a meticulous collaborative operation between the Italian and Swiss authorities. The Italian border police provided crucial information that allowed their Swiss colleagues to stop the two fugitives at the checkpoint. The couple is currently at the disposal of the Swiss authorities awaiting extradition proceedings to Italy.

Ermelinda only had 4 days left until the end of her sentence: now she risks up to a year

Once extradited, the two escapees will probably be placed in a prison near the border, where they will be subjected to a more severe detention regime. Emilian still had to serve three years after being convicted for the attack on a 57-year-old, in front of a bar in Punta Marina di Ravenna, on 21 January 2018. The man received five stab wounds in the stomach because, at the request to host he, Ermelinda and another Albanian friend had responded negatively. The security cameras had filmed the scene: Ermelinda had grabbed the man’s arms and Emilian and his friend had hit him with 5 blows. Ermelinda’s escape was strange, with only 3 days left until the end of her sentence. She now risks getting a sentence ranging from 6 months to a year.
