There will be citizen mourning in Latina for the death of Satnam Singh, the 31-year-old worker of Indian origin who was the victim of the very serious workplace accident that occurred on a farm in the countryside of Borgo Santa Maria last Monday 17 June.
The announcement by the mayor Matilde Celentano in the late afternoon today, after the news of the death of the young labourer. Her story has been around all over Italy in recent days. While he was working, the 31-year-old had lost his arm in a plastic wrapping machine pulled by a tractor which had also crushed his lower limbs. Instead of being rescued, he was loaded onto a minibus and abandoned near his home with his severed arm resting on a box used for harvesting vegetables. Rescued by the 118 health workers, he was then urgently transported by air ambulance to the San Camillo hospital in Rome where he was hospitalized in serious condition.
“Interpreting the common feeling of our community, deeply shaken by the event, and of all the political forces that sit in the City Council – declared the mayor Celentano today -, I announce that tomorrow I will provide through a specific ordinance to call the city mourning, with the ‘flying the flag at half-mast, for the death of the young labourer’.
Dead laborer, the Municipality wants to take civil action
The Lazio Region, however, has made it known that it will cover the funeral costs and, once those responsible have been identified, it will become a civil party in the trial against them. This was announced by President Francesco Rocca who, together with the Councilor for Agriculture, Giancarlo Righini, expressed his “condolences, on behalf of the regional Administration, to the wife and family of the agricultural worker” reiterating “the firm condemnation for the happened, confirming the commitment of the regional administration in the fight against gangmastering and for the safety of workers in every production sector”.
And again the Lazio Region, on the initiative of the governor Rocca and the councilor for Labor Giuseppe Schiboni, has urgently convened a table with the regional trade union organizations on the topic of safety in the workplace, in light of the latest, tragic, unrelated deaths and impending heat waves. The roundtable will be held on Friday morning and will be coordinated by councilor Schiboni, in the presence of the general director of the Lazio Region, Alessandro Ridolfi.
