Elder abuse, an initiative in Catanzaro to raise public awareness

CATANZARO June 15th is the International Day for Elder Abuse Awareness (WEAAD – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day), established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. This day aims to raise public awareness of a serious and often underestimated phenomenon that affects older people. The RaGi Association – Dementia Centers Calabria, in collaboration with the Calabria Region, the Rotary Club of Catanzaro and Esi Sud, organized an event to draw attention to this issue, a few days after the official date. The initiative provides a free screening to evaluate the lifestyle and cognitive impairment of people aged 60 and over. Furthermore, a meeting will be held to discuss “old age” and related issues, with the participation of experts in the sector. The appointment is scheduled for Thursday 20 June, starting at 4.30pm, at the headquarters of the day center of the RaGi Association. Starting from 4.30pm, it will be possible to take part in a free screening dedicated to people aged 65 and over, to collect information on lifestyle and cognitive impairment. At 18:00 there will be a viewing of the awareness video “Human” by director Melizwi Nkululeko Tsabedze. This will be followed by institutional greetings from the president of the Rotary Club of Catanzaro, Carlo Malettaand the interventions of the speakers; Elena Sodanopresident of the RaGi Onlus Association; Giovanni Fronteraneurologist doctor; Elisabetta Macrinaintensive care doctor and member of the Catanzaro Rotary Club; Amanda Gigliotti, Psychologist. The meeting will be moderated by Fabio Scavo, president of the Image and Communication Commission of the Rotary Club of Catanzaro. By 2050, more than 20% of the world’s population will be aged 60 or older, with a significant increase in the number of older people especially in developing countries. Older women, in particular, face multiple forms of discrimination based on gender, age, disability and other factors, which negatively impact their human rights. Between 2019 and 2030, the number of people aged 60 and over will grow by 38%, from 1 billion to 1.4 billion, surpassing the number of young people globally. This trend represents a challenge for governments, which must guarantee the rights of older people. Elder abuse is a widespread problem in both developed and developing countries, but it is often underreported. According to the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (SIGG), in Italy one in three elderly people is a victim of abuse. A global response is needed to protect the rights of older people and combat this phenomenon. With these initiatives, the RaGi Association and its partners are committed to raising awareness in the community and promoting the well-being of the elderly, offering support and valuable information. During the event, the Rotary Club and Esi Sud will deliver a defibrillator to CasaPaese. Doctor Domenico Cavallaro, representative of Esi Sud, partner of the project, will speak.
