Florence, 19 June 2024 – The first yes from the Chamber to the autonomy bill arouses opposite reactions in Tuscany.

“Today, with the approval of Autonomy in the Chamber, we celebrate an important step not only for the League, but for the whole of Italy. A reform – says the Tuscan deputy of the League Andrea Barabotti – in the wake of the Constitution for which ours Tuscany had started the process to request the activation of article 116. Administrative decentralization and a say to the territories will be the recipe for relaunching Italy with the full involvement of citizens. Centralism has caused damage for years: this will be the real solution to fill the gaps and guarantee fair services from North to South. Thanks to Minister Calderoli, to our secretary Matteo Salvini and to all the Tuscan Northern League members for having believed in us completely and having brought us to this epochal milestone. Now the Region will continue with the process already started to reach an agreement with the government and be not only more autonomous but also stronger”.

The president of the regional council has a completely different opinion, Antonio Mazzeo: “Differentiated autonomy splits Italy, increases inequalities between north and south, between large cities and internal areas and risks creating 20 different small Italys, all weaker. We – says Mazzeo – want an Italy capable of helping the most vulnerable without leaving anyone behind and for this reason we will use every possible means to oppose this plan of the right. Not only will we collect citizens’ signatures, but I will ask the other 4 fellow presidents of the centre-left majority regional councils to promote together, in accordance with the provisions of Article 75 of the Constitution, the immediate request for a referendum to repeal the law. We will not stand by and watch the right destroy a piece of our country’s history.”
