Irregular waste management: six under investigation in Calabria

Six people are under investigation as part of an investigation by the Paola Prosecutor’s Office into the alleged irregular management of urban waste in the Municipality of Fuscaldo, which in 2020 was contracted out to an external company in the sector. The investigation began after a check by the Paola Traffic Police on some compactors that carried out the local collection of MSW, dispersing waste and sewage along the roads. The control was then extended to all the subjects of the waste management chain, in particular identifying the storage center for the vehicles carrying out the collection of urban and bulky waste in Fuscaldo, an area which, however, according to the investigators, was also transformed into a real illegal open-air landfill.

At the site, in fact, the Polstrada found differentiated and undifferentiated waste on the ground and in containers placed on the ground, spills of polluting liquids on the ground, as well as special dangerous waste such as household appliances, old electronic devices, asbestos sheets and lead accumulators. of motor vehicles; also a modest quantity of expired medicines.

Therefore, irregular management of the waste collection and disposal service was hypothesized, which did not comply with environmental standards. The area, upon order of the judicial authority, was therefore seized pending reclamation.
