Dozens of illegal workers discovered in the center of Venice

The action of the Financial Police of Venice against “undeclared work” continues unabated, with particular attention to the historic center of the lagoon.

Since the beginning of 2024, the soldiers of the Provincial Command, through routine economic-financial checks, have identified 28 workers completely “off the books” (i.e. without any employment contract and not reported to the employment centers) and 24 workers “irregular” (employees with qualifications or hours different from the actual ones, or contracted on “call” but not communicated to the Labor Inspectorate for the control days). This has allowed employers to obtain significant savings on salary, contribution, insurance and tax costs.

In the last week, for example, the financiers of the 1st Metropolitan Operations Unit discovered 16 workers, some of whom were completely illegal, employed at a ballroom in the Arsenale area and a general store in the Cannaregio area.

In total, 19 employers – mainly operating in the tourism sector, such as restaurants, bars, dance halls, emporiums and souvenir shops – were sanctioned for the use of “illegal” and/or irregular labour, with fines ranging from a minimum of 1,950 euros to a maximum of 11,700 euros for each irregular worker discovered.

In particular, for four activities (emporiums, knick-knack shops and restaurants) where a majority of illegal workers were found compared to regular workers, the immediate suspension of the activity was proposed to the Territorial Labor Inspectorate. Following this provision, employers regularized the position of workers hired illegally (Italians, Chinese and Bangladeshis), paying a further administrative fine of 2,500 euros to avoid closure.

Since the beginning of the year, throughout the province of Venice, the Guardia di Finanza has discovered 101 illegal workers and 86 irregular workers, reporting 59 employers.

These inspection activities are fundamental for the protection of the legal economy: illegal work is a plague for the entire economic system, taking resources away from the Treasury, damaging the interests of often exploited workers, and representing one of the most harmful forms of unfair competition .
