TO Salerno Literature he arrives «The weight of blood»the new novel by Vladimiro Bottone published by Solferino.
Tomorrow, Thursday 20 June at 8.30pm (Arco Catalano, via Mercanti 67, Salerno) the author meets i readers and the public, in dialogue with Antonella Trotta (University of Salerno).
«The weight of blood» is the tenth title published by Vladimiro Bottone, Neapolitan by birth and Turin by adoption, who writes for the cultural pages of Corriere della Sera e publicevery Sunday for nine years, an unpublished story for the Corriere del Mezzogiorno.
«The weight of blood» highlights how the genesis ofRepublican Italy has its roots in the years of Civil war following 8 September 1943. Here then is the dramatic experience of Italy, torn between the Republic of Salòon the one hand, and the Resistence on the other, it is told by «The weight of blood» through the most unimaginable relationship: that between the young Jewish girl Myriam and the official of fascist police Troise. A “scandalous” liaison because of unexpected sentimental, existential and political developments. A human story capable, as great novels always do, of problematizing paradigms, undermining the reader’s beliefs and the most conventional expectations.
In Turin in 1944the destinies of Myriam Pescaroloa young Jewish woman from Turin, who escaped deportation, and TroiseOVRA official, fascist out of a misunderstood sense of patriotism. His mission in Turin: reactivate the network of informants. Desperate and undocumented, Myriam wanders the city at the mercy of circumstances. Her case puts Troise in a position to save her from a lynching. Between the two characters an explosion explodes nearness irresistible and controversial. But when Myriam comes into contact with the Resistance, the situation for both of them goes from dangerous to deadly.
But “The Weight of Blood” is a novel choral: other leading figures gravitate around the protagonists. Characters who offer the reader the precious opportunity to reflect on the complex transition between Fascism and democratic Italy: this is the case of Guido Letohistorical figure, who was head of the OVRA, then tried and finally reinstated to hold the position of Technical Director of the Police Schools of the newly formed Italian Republic.
The formal perfection and cinematic rhythm of “The Weight of Blood” paint a vivid scenario crossed by flashes of powerful emotions: terror, passion, the thirst for glory, the anxiety of surviving. A «fiction of the Nation», as it was defined. A breathless spy story and a tormented love story that unfold like on a big screen. Better, onto the greatest of all: reality.
