L’Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria–Bova Cathedral Basilica of Maria Ss Assunta in Cielo and the FreeTogether OdV Association are pleased to invite citizens to the concert which will be held on Sunday 23 June at 8.30 pm at the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria. It will be executed “Stabat mater” by K. Jenkins, work for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra: sublime, moving, exciting composition, which will see more than 100 choristers and an orchestra of around 40 elements engaged in united choirs.

The intention is to offer a prayer for the suffering humanity, closeness to all the mothers of the war zones. Classically the “Stabat Mater” focuses on the suffering of the Madonna at the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion, but unlike most adaptations of the text, Jenkins uses languages other than Latin and blends traditional Western music (orchestra and choir) with Middle Eastern suggestions given by ethnic instruments and voice.

The Welsh composer’s work spans twelve movements, six of which use texts different from the original poem, such as the piece “And the Mother did weep”, which features a single line sung simultaneously in English, Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Jewish; or “Lament,” a poem by Jenkins’ wife, Carol Barratt, and “Incantation,” which is partly sung in ancient Arabic translated into English and Aramaic.
